  1. Wellington, Arthur Wellesley, 1st Duke of
  2. Wellington 1769-1852. British soldier and
  3. Tory politician. As commander in the
  4. Peninsular War, he expelled the French from
  5. Spain in 1814. He defeated Napoleon Bonaparte
  6. at Quatre-Bras and Waterloo in 1815, and was
  7. a member of the Congress of Vienna. As prime
  8. minister 1828-30, he was forced to concede
  9. Roman Catholic emancipation. Wellington was
  10. born in Ireland, the son of an Irish peer,
  11. and sat for a time in the Irish parliament.
  12. He was knighted for his army service in India
  13. and became a national hero with his victories
  14. of 1808-14 in the Peninsular War and as
  15. general of the allies against Napoleon. At
  16. the Congress of Vienna he opposed the
  17. dismemberment of France and supported
  18. restoration of the Bourbons. As prime
  19. minister he modified the Corn Laws but became
  20. unpopular for his opposition to parliamentary
  21. reform and his lack of opposition to Catholic
  22. emancipation. He was foreign secretary
  23. 1834-35 and a member of the cabinet 1841-46.
  24. He held the office of commander in chief of
  25. the forces at various times from 1827 and for
  26. life from 1842. His home was Apsley House in
  27. London.
